The Arts

A unique exploration of fields and disciplines that shape the creative industries

The Arts: IgnitED Careers Mentoring Programme

IgnitED’s Arts programme offers a dynamic, hands-on dive into the creative industries — spanning fine art, performance, digital media, and design. Participants broaden their understanding of creative practices, discovering how creativity thrives across traditional art forms as well as games design, fashion, music production, and podcasting.

Guided by an experienced artistic mentor, students explore how art connects with environment and community, while uncovering the real-world roles that bring creative work to life. They also visit two leading creative institutions, engaging with studios and faculty to gain first-hand insight into diverse career pathways in the arts.

Alongside practical advice on post-school opportunities, the programme sparks fresh conversations about what creative careers look like today — from traditional routes to innovative, non-linear journeys. By the end of the week, participants see creativity not only as self-expression, but as a powerful opportunity for storytelling, design, innovation, and professional fulfillment.

  • Fundraising for the Arts

IgnitED’s Fundraising for the Arts session introduces participants to the practicalities of funding creative work.

Using Arts Council England as the practical case study, students explore how public funding is allocated, what makes a strong project proposal, and how artistic ambition is balanced with audience needs, budgeting, and timeline planning.

Working in groups, participants develop concise grant applications for the artwork created in a previous session, applying real-world criteria and guidance. They then present their proposals in a competitive pitch, simulating the funding decision-making process and gaining valuable experience in persuasive communication.

By the end of the workshop, Participants have a clear understanding of:

    • How artists secure financial support for creative projects

    • What funders look for in strong applications

    • How funding structures shape opportunities across the creative sector

This session equips aspiring creatives with grant-writing skills, pitching confidence, and financial awareness — knowledge highly valued by employers, essential for entrepreneurial resilience, and respected in university applications.

  • Engaging Community in Art

IgnitEDs Arts programme explores how the arts contribute to communities and how cultural organisations create inclusive, accessible work. Through guided discussions and interactive tasks, Participants unpack key concepts such as culture, diversity, inclusion, equality, equity, and accessibility, examining how these values shape creative practice in the modern arts sector.

Participants take part in a structured research project on community art, mapping how Teams working for creative organisations support children, young people, and audiences with additional needs. This hands-on investigation highlights the important presence of inclusive arts initiatives and the role of creativity in fostering social connection.

By the end of the session, participants gain a deeper awareness of community-focused practice and are encouraged to reflect on the social impact of their own creative work.

  • Storytelling Through Art

IgnitED’s Arts programme introduces Participants to the power of storytelling through art, showing how everyday surroundings can spark creative ideas. Participants explore what counts as “art” and uncover the hidden stories embedded in places, objects, and environments.

A creative scouting exercise encourages Participants to notice overlooked details and capture inspiration through sketches, photos, and written impressions. In the seminar room, they collaborate in small groups to transform these observations into narrative-led artistic concepts, using mixed media to design a piece that conveys a story of place, identity, or community.

This interactive session helps participants understand how artists use environment and experience as raw material for creative work. It also builds confidence in shaping personal stories into visual form, developing skills that are highly valued in the creative industries, higher education, and future arts careers.

  • Co‑Lab: Collaborative Learning and Industry Reflection.

Co‑Lab is a daily feature of the IgnitED programme, bringing participants together for collaborative problem‑solving, structured reflection, and interdisciplinary learning.

Each day, Participants step into mixed‑discipline teams, to identify global themes, emerging challenges, and explore how different fields of engineering, medicine, business, legal, and artistic creative industries intersect in real professional environments.

Every Co‑Lab group tackles an interdisciplinary challenge project. These challenges require participants to pool knowledge, negotiate approaches, and deliver joint solutions, mirroring the teamwork and innovation demanded in modern careers.

This unique combination of guided reflection and cross‑industry collaboration helps IgnitED participants:

    • Make sense of their daily learning experiences

    • Understand the wider context of their chosen career pathway

    • Build communication, problem‑solving, and teamwork skills valued across all industries

Co‑Lab ensures that every participant leaves not only with industry insights but also with the transferable skills and collaborative mindset that employers and universities look for.
